Wonwei and Síminn, Iceland’s largest telecommunications company, joined forces during the 2011 Iceland Airwaves music festival, creating an interactive music installation at the Reykjavik Art Museum.

The five-day festival annually attracts thousands of international music lovers to the city center of Reykjavik to watch acts like Björk, Hot Chip, Bloc Party, Ratatat, Sigur Rós, GusGus, and Crystal Castles. Síminn is one of the festival’s main corporate sponsor and the official mobile app provider.

For this project Wonwei developed an interactive installation that integrates people’s movement with music and QR codes, generating sequences of interactive geometric shapes. At regular intervals the shapes transform into a QR code which the festival attendees could scan with their mobile phones, thereby accessing exclusive information about the ongoing festival.

The visuals from the installation were used as a blueprint for all of Síminn’s presence during the festival, establishing a dynamic identity employed in various mediums; newspaper advertisements, outdoor advertising, banners, and Síminn’s retail store interiors. The installation was set up at the Reykjavik Art Museum, one of the festival venues, accessible both to festival attendees during live performances and to museum visitors during museum opening hours.

Few days before the start of the festival, Wonwei gathered some of the musicians to test the installation at the Reykjavik Art Museum – with the special addition of a rather large trampoline. Watch the video created by Wonwei below and scan the QR code at the end to get more information about the festival and the musicians starring in the video.

The screencast below shows a demonstration of the interactive music installation developed for this project:
