At a gathering of makers and tinkerers at the Xindanwei co-working space in Shanghai last weekend, Harald Haraldsson, the founder of Wonwei, gave a short talk about creative open source tools and their use in customer acquisition and monetization.
The talk was done as a live video feed using openFrameworks, OpenCV, and Arduino, combined with a sheet of paper and a pen. As a proof of concept, a hard copy of the presentation was sold to a member of the audience for the reasonable price of RMB 10.
The talk touched upon few key elements in Wonwei’s business approach, such as leveraging the strong global momentum of the do-it-yourself (DIY) movement and the democratization of manufacturing, as well as how the open source concept has come of age and is now being applied by both independent inventors and large multinational companies.
